Durham Dales

The Durham Dales is a stunningly beautiful rural area in the west of County Durham, and here you will find some of the highest, wildest and finest scenery in England. Part of the North Pennines, it includes one of the country’s largest Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) including Britain’s first European and Global Geopark.

At first glance there are the dry stone walls, field barns and hay meadows, so characteristic of the North Pennine landscape, but look more closely and the areas’ special secrets begin to unfold. There is the internationally important geology, flora and fauna, and the endlessly fascinating stories of Man’s influence and history which has shaped the social and cultural landscape of the Dales right down to present day.

Add to that a selection of terrific accommodation, plenty to see and do and the warmth of the famous Dales’ welcome and it all makes for a great holiday destination. The Durham Dales includes the river valleys of Teesdale and Derwentside with Wear Valley right at its heart – encapsulating all the Dales’ stories and charm in one compact area. With its source high in the Pennine Hills, the River Wear has long been recognised as one of the main waterways of North East England. As it threads its way through a rich, varied landscape, the river provides the perfect companion to accompany you on your journey between Wear Valley’s towns, villages and historic sites.
